Charlie has retired from training, but not from racing. He will continue to purchase and sell horses, as well as run syndicates.

If you are considering buying a new racehorse and would like Charlie’s help and expertise or if you are thinking about joining a syndicate, please do get in touch.

Racehorse Search & Selection

Since retiring from training Charlie has spent the last month buying a couple of horses in France to sell on.  So far it’s going better than expected and Charlie is on the look out for more horses to fulfill a number of orders from ex owners.  He’s also on the look out for talent for his new Charlie Mann syndicate.

Charlie has a lot of support from several of his old owners who know that he has a good eye for a decent horse, excellent contacts and that he is also great at finding those good horses at a decent price.

If you would like Charlie to look for a horse for you and also advise on a suitable trainer for your new horse, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Racing Management

Charlie has been asked for advice by a number of his old owners with regards to moving yards and recommending trainers. Some trainers train hard, others have a softer approach, and not all horses will be suited to certain training regimens.  If you feel like you might need someone ‘on your team’ with plenty of experience and knowledge, do give Charlie a call to discuss how he can help.

First Class Facilities

Oliver Sherwood will now be training from Charlie’s purpose built yard situated near the foot of the gallops in Upper Lambourn, while Charlie will remain in residence next door at Neardown House.  The yard at Neardown is a five star ‘horse hotel’, and the horses look forward to coming back to base after they’ve enjoyed their summer holidays.

With access to all of The Jockey Club’s facilities at the Lambourn gallops, the horses have the best location in England for their training – not to mention the five star care and attention they receive from Oliver’s dedicated staff.

Charlie intends to keep some syndicate horses here with Oliver for training so he can stay involved.  He would also like to ride out if Oliver will let him!

a successful training career

About Charlie

Charlie was a successful National Hunt Jockey for fifteen years before breaking his neck in a fall in 1989.  In 1993 he started his career as a racehorse trainer, and in 1995 he rode and trained the winner of the Grand Pardubice on It’s A Snip.

Charlie’s most notable horses during his 28 year training career were Celibate, Moral Support, Moon Over Miami and Katie’s Tutor.  Celibate won the Punchestown Grade 1 Champion Chase under Richard Dunwoody in 2000 and is probably the horse most people remember.  More recently Charlie won the London National and Sussex National with Morney Wing, and also the Somerset National with Like The Sound.  His horse ‘Defi Des Carres’ got beaten by a nose in the cross country chase at Cheltenham in December!

Now officially retired from training, Charlie is setting up his first ever syndicate as a syndicator and manager, and has already sold seven out of the ten shares available without advertising.

Breakfast & gallops tours

Experience the Lambourn gallops

Find out what it takes to train a winner by spending the morning here at Neardown with its new, successful and highly-experienced Grand National trainer, Oliver Sherwood.  You’ll start the morning bright and early at Neardown before being taken up onto the famous Lambourn gallops to watch a string or two being put through their paces.  There are 37 trainers in Lambourn so always plenty of action first thing in the morning!

Once back at the yard they’ll be coffee, a chance to ask Oliver questions (racing related or not), and a tour of the yard to meet the horses.  You’ll gain a real insight into the world of horseracing ‘behind the scenes’.

The morning is suitable for those with plenty of knowledge and those that don’t know much about racing at all, but would like to find out more.  It’s an exciting morning that comes highly recommended by those that have already experienced it.  So much so, that we often see the same faces over and over again!

What’s included:

  • A breakfast bap and coffee
  • Watch the horses being put through their morning training session on the famous Lambourn gallops
  • Learn about the work that goes into racing and get tips on spotting a champion
  • Experience this unique opportunity that’s not just for horse racing fans
  • It all takes place at Neardown and on the gallops!

To book a breakfast tour of Neardown with Oliver Sherwood (including a trip to watch racehorses working on the gallops) email Emma via  oliver.sherwood@virgin.net.

Once you have expressed interest, we will send you the full details and then firm up your booking.  (This experience makes a wonderful present for any horseracing enthusiast, and if it’s a birthday we’ll put on a cake too!)
