We’re passionate about racing and passionate about horses. Meet the Charlie Mann – racehorse trainer, and his team.
Charlie was a very successful National Hunt Jockey for fifteen years before breaking his neck in a fall in 1989. In 1993 he started his illustrious career as a racehorse trainer, and in 1995 he rode and trained the winner of the Grand Pardubice on It’s A Snip. The same year he was voted the Most Eligible Bachelor Of The Year!
For 14 years Charlie trained from Whitcoombe House Stables, which is situated at the bottom of the Mandown Gallops in Lambourn. In February 2012 Charlie purchased Neardown Stables in Upper Lambourn. In July the building work started on the new all-purpose yard and by 1st October the British Horseracing Association (BHA) granted Charlie his license to train from Neardown.
Since starting his career as a racehorse trainer, Charlie has trained over 800 winners at every level over jumps.

Albert has come to us from Charlie Longsdon, and Charlie has known him since he was at Jenny Pitman’s. Albert is a great horseman and a brilliant Head Lad. Charlie is delighted to have him as a member of our team.
Kyryl has worked at Neardown from the get-go. He’s an incredibly hard worker and very dedicated. Kryrl knows the form of every horse on the yard.
Charlie feels very lucky to have such a great team behind him. His current full time lads and lasses after Albert (Head Lad) & Kryrl (Travelling Head Lad) include the fabulous Mick and his partner Jill – all dedicated, experienced and hard working.
In the office, Charlie is supported by his girlfriend Kate – mistress of hospitality, entries, emails and tweets. Website stuff and other marketing is also looked after by Kate, and Lilly the dog keeps all horses and staff in order. In fact, Lilly really is in charge!
Charlie has found a new conditional Jockey recently in the name of Angus Cheleda. Angus is a hardworking, brilliant new addition to the team.
We are proud to offer first class facilities at our purpose built yard situated near the foot of the gallops in Upper Lambourn – including turn out paddocks and turn out pens, a covered horse walker, weigh scales, and a solarium. It really is a five star horse hotel, and the horses can’t wait to come back to the yard after their holidays. With access to an excellent five furlong ‘cushion track’ all weather gallop and a range of schooling fences, not to mention access to all of The Jockey Club’s Mandown Gallops, the horses have the absolute best facilities available for their training and the five star care and attention from Charlie’s loyal staff.
There is is stabling for 44 horses in this professional but friendly yard.

“My old gallop is the most popular in Lambourn. That’s due to the fact that Cushion Track is a consistent, high quality riding surface – it’s certainly the best i have ridden on!” – Charlie Mann, Racehorse Trainer Lambourn
HORSES IN TRAINING
Every successful racehorse trainer needs great horses. We focus on quality, not quantity in the yard and currently have up to 30 horses in training. This ensures that every horse gets the individual attention he or she needs, and that Charlie knows the form of every horse on the yard, as do his team of dedicated staff.

STG Racing Partnership
There are many different ways you can become involved in racehorse ownership. The main thing to remember is that owning a racehorse (or at least part of one) does not have to be expensive! It’s also important to find a racehorse trainer you like and get on with as you’ll be seeing rather a lot of each other!
Racehorse ownership can turn a thrilling hobby into something much more special as you experience the thrill of a first class racing day out with a ‘vested interest’, not just a bet.
The ownership option most suitable for you will vary depending on your budget and the amount of involvement you would like to have.
Here at Charlie Mann Racing we can tailor your ownership experience to suit you, be it becoming a sole owner, setting up a partnership with your friends or joining some of our existing partnerships. Charlie has a wealth of experience and knowledge to assist with buying your horse. Accompanying him to the sales can be an exciting start to ownership – why not hand pick your own horse with Charlie’s guidance? We also have a selection of horses for sale at Neardown that you can see being put through their paces at first in Lambourn on the gallops.
We offer a few options for the payment of the training fees. Some of our owners pay an upfront training fee for a set amount each year to cover all the cost involved with owning a racehorse. This completely cuts the risk of any unforeseen and extra payments. Other owners are invoiced monthly for the training fees which are made up of a daily charge and the occasional extra costs incurred, such as vets fees and travel expenses to the races.
Please don’t hesitate to contact Charlie on 01488 73118 or firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss options to suit you.
THE 25 CLUB
There’s nothing more exciting than racehorse ownership and joining a syndicate can be a great way of getting in on the fun without worrying too much about the cost. There are currently only a few places left in our new syndicate ‘The 25 Club’, and one share left in ‘The Neardowners’ – so if you’re interested in joining a syndicate contact Charlie asap! A further option is ‘The Steeplechasers’ syndicate. Charlie trains the horses for the syndicate, but the syndicate operates separately and is managed by owners Bill Brindle & Andy Stone. They currently have a couple of shares available too.
Looking for the perfect gift for a horse racing enthusiast? How about spending a morning with Charlie or his professional assistant trainer at our Lambourn HQ. You’ll have an early start – but the gift experience begins with a hearty farmhouse breakfast with Charlie and/or his assistant trainer. One of Charlie’s jockeys might pop in for a chat too. Then you’ll head out to the gallops to watch the horses being put through their morning training session. Learn all about the training and groundwork that it takes to turn a horse into a champion – and get some tips on spotting a winner. Charlie has trained over 400 winners and can answer all your questions. This really is a wonderful start to the day.
