A Fun Ownership Experience
We love what we do, and more than anything we enjoy introducing people to the fun of racehorse ownership. We think our passion is infectious, and we operate an open door policy – actively encouraging our owners to pop by for breakfast and a trip up to the gallops to see their horses working. We think it’s important to keep regular touch too, so you can expect plenty of reports on your horses from Charlie himself, not to mention those all important entry and declaration updates. A day’s racing with us is special, because we’re a social bunch and we like to go the extra mile to make sure you and your guests have a great day out. We’ll also ensure you have plenty of winners too.
Over 900 Winners
Charlie was a very successful National Hunt Jockey for fifteen years before breaking his neck in a fall in 1989. In 1993 he started his illustrious career as a racehorse trainer, and in 1995 he rode and trained the winner of the Grand Pardubice on It’s A Snip. The same year he was voted the Most Eligible Bachelor Of The Year!
Charlie has a great team behind him who are all extremely dedicated and ambitious, and great care is taken to look after the horses to the highest standard. The team believe that happy, healthy horses are the key to great results.
Charlie has a great set of owners – many of whom have been with him since the very beginning. He is rarely off the phone personally updating owners with the progression of their horses, not to mention sharing his anecdotes to all that will listen around the breakfast table.
Charlie feels very lucky to have such a great team of staff. His current full time lads and lasses are Albert (Head Lad) & Kyryl (Travelling Head Lad), senior staff Mick and Jill, and juniors Adam and Noah – all dedicated, experienced and hard working. He is also assisted by his other half Kate, and the very important assistant trainer Lily the dog.
Valley of the Racehorse
We are proud to offer first class facilities at our purpose built yard situated near the foot of the gallops in Upper Lambourn – including turn out paddocks and turn out pens, a covered horse walker, weigh scales, colours room, general tack room and office. Neardown is a five star horse hotel, and the horses look forward to coming back to the yard after their holidays. With access to the Lambourn gallops and all of The Jockey Club’s facilities, the horses have the best location in England for their training – not to mention the five star care and attention from Charlie’s loyal staff.
20% Strike Rate
Winners Per Year (Flat & NH)
With between twenty five to thirty horses with us each season, we have consistently had more winners than several names in Lambourn that have three to four times this amount of horses on their books. Our strike rate averages out at 20% over this time frame, and we think this is something to shout about. We have been described as ‘Lambourn’s little secret’ by racing journalists. Send your horse to us and we will get results.

Become An Owner
Here at Charlie Mann Racing we can tailor your ownership experience to suit you, be it becoming a sole owner, setting up a partnership with your friends or joining some of our existing partnerships. Charlie has a wealth of experience and knowledge to assist with buying your horse. Accompanying him to the sales can be an exciting start to ownership – why not hand pick your own horse with Charlie’s guidance? We also have a selection of horses for sale at Neardown that you can see being put through their paces at first in Lambourn on the gallops.
We offer a few options for the payment of the training fees. Some of our owners pay an upfront training fee for a set amount each year to cover all the cost involved with owning a racehorse. This completely cuts the risk of any unforeseen and extra payments. Other owners are invoiced monthly for the training fees which are made up of a daily charge and the occasional extra costs incurred, such as vets fees and travel expenses to the races.
Please don’t hesitate to contact Charlie on 01488 73118 or email@example.com to discuss options to suit you.
Take A Share
There’s nothing more exciting than racehorse ownership, and joining a syndicate can be a great way of getting in on the fun without worrying too much about the cost. There are currently only a few places left in our new syndicate ‘The 25 Club’, and one share left in ‘The Neardowners’ – so if you’re interested in joining a syndicate give us a call to arrange a stable visit.
The 25 Club is a three horse syndicate comprising of The Lion Dancer, Zen Master & The Ogle Gogle Man. The Lion Dancer has won his last three out of three races and is a born staying chaser. Zen Master has won and been placed numerous times. He is going chasing this season. The Ogle Gogle Man has been placed almost every time. He’s a bigger, better horse this season and a win is on the cards at any minute. To own your 25th share in all three horses, get in touch. Once the season is in full swing the remaining shares won’t hang around. The cost of owning a share in all three horses in £8000 – with no VAT or training fees to pay for the first year. Subsequent years are training fees only, minus any prize money. Prize money over the past season was in excess of £23,000 – making training fees for this season extremely affordable!
The Neardowners is currently a two horse syndicate comprising of Royals & Rebels and Cody Wyoming. Royals has already won this season, and Cody will be back to winning when the ground gets softer for him. Cody won several times last season and has a legion of loyal fans. There are twelve members of the syndicate and the horses are leased, which means we can keep the costs down. There are currently two shares still available for this season. Training fees can be paid monthly or in full. Monthly training fees work out at approximately £300 per month for twelve months. Call us in the office for more information, or drop us an email if you are interested.
Find out what it takes to train a winner by spending the morning here at Neardown. You’ll start the morning bright and early and enjoy breakfast with Charlie before you are taken up onto the famous Lambourn gallops to watch Charlie’s string being put through their paces.
Once back at the yard they’ll be coffee, a chance to ask questions (racing related or not), and a tour of the yard to meet the horses. You’ll gain a real insight into the world of horseracing and learn plenty of things about the sport. They’ll be plenty of Charlie’s anecdotes and a chance to view all the racing memorabilia in the office.
The morning is suitable for those with plenty of knowledge and those that don’t know much about racing but would like to find out more. It’s an exciting morning, and if there’s racing on that afternoon nearby, Charlie will also get you owners and trainers badges for that particular meeting.
- A hearty breakfast with Charlie
- Watch the horses being put through their morning training session
- Learn about the work that goes into racing and get tips on spotting a champion

We've had a good little run lately with a double at Hereford & Huntingdon with Ilewin Geez & Fixed Rate. Fixed Rate was especially pleasing as he is a five year old flat bred horse having his first run over fences, and he jumped like a cat! We also...read more
